Top 5 Trends for a Beautiful Kitchen Remodel

The kitchen is often the heart of the home. Here are five ways to give this gathering space a modern look during your next remodel.

Custom Countertops

Have fun with your countertops while increasing functionality. Incorporate a wooden butcher block or marble slab in to increase ease while engaging in various projects. For a personal touch, embed glass or metal accents into the surface.

Out-of-Sight Appliances

Appliances are finding their way off the counter and into nooks created just for their storage, opening up surface space and reducing clutter. Begin by removing any items that are not used daily. For appliances that are utilized regularly, set them in a nearby space that can be easily accessed in a pinch.

Stainless Steel

Create a streamlined feel in your kitchen by coordinating appliances. Stainless steel is a long-standing trend that offers a clean, shiny look.

High-Reaching Cabinets

Efficiency is key here. Cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling offer yet another shelf on which you can place those items that are used sparingly. In addition, they remove the need to regularly clean the open space left above cabinets in designs of yesteryear.

Bold Fixtures

Illuminating the kitchen now means more than simply adding in one overhead light fixture. Opt for bold, colorful fixtures above different zones to add a pop of style while being functional.

When Is It Time To Renovate Your Kitchen?

Sometimes, you just need to renovate a room. Learn what signs to look for if you suspect that your kitchen needs some updates.

Many homeowners dream and plan for their kitchen renovation from the time they buy their homes, but deciding when to go through with a remodel can still be a difficult choice. Balancing the needs of various rooms in a home is a big challenge, and then deciding how to prioritize those improvements against new vehicles, vacations, and other major purchases can add complexity. Luckily, there are a few ways to know when the time has come to make room for your new kitchen in your budget and your schedule.

The first, and probably most obvious, sign that you are due for a kitchen remodel is when you can afford it. Most experts recommend paying cash for home upgrades if you can, and waiting on major renovations until a cash budget is possible. If that option is not reasonable because of other motivating factors, then it is still a good idea to wait until you pay off another line of credit, like a car or student loan, and then to use that money to budget for the new kitchen. This kind of remodel is a major investment, after all, so finding the budgetary space for it is key to your success.

Another sign that you need to move forward with a kitchen redesign is if your old finishes and fixtures are starting to wear out or peel off. Some economic countertop choices in older homes, like formica countertops, will peel with age, and the older the counters the more likely this is to happen. Similarly, sinks and other fixtures can get damaged or show signs of wear in a variety of ways, including needing constant repair and attention. A remodel is also a chance to update electrical work, so if your kitchen regularly blows fuses, that too could be a telltale sign that you need to budget for upgrades to get the most out of your home.

The last thing to think about is where you are at in terms of your home upgrades, maintenance, and other regular concerns that go to protecting your assets and investments. If you have already taken care of all the more pressing repairs and you have the budget for it, then it’s actually the perfect time to handle your kitchen. Taking care of it now means that you get to enjoy the final design earlier, and for more years to come. There are a variety of options, some of which can preserve elements of your existing kitchen to keep more of the home’s original appeal. The Basics of Concrete Staining

Concrete staining has become a popular way to color garage floors, outdoor patios and basement floors. Here are few basics of concrete staining.

Getting Started

Before you can stain your concrete floors, it is important to understand why concrete staining works. The two most popular stains are water based and acid based. Water-based products become a permanent part of the concrete, while acid based stains have a chemical reaction with the minerals that creates a different color. If you want a more marbled effect, you will be happy with the acid based stains. However, water based stains still provide beautiful color and will not have to be sealed with an ammonia solution.

Application

Applying the concrete stain is a simple process that can be done in a short amount of time. The basic steps include gathering your materials, prepping the floor, applying the stain and protecting the floor with a sealant. Important materials needed for preparation and staining are:

  • Tarp
  • Broom and dustpan
  • Hose
  • Non-tearing paint mat
  • Paint pan
  • Paint brush
  • Concrete stain
  • Bucket of water and rag

To prep the floor, you need to make sure it is free of dirt and other loose residue. Once you clean the floor, let it dry for 24 hours before applying the stain. When you apply, it is easiest to paint the edges first and then work in sections. After about 24 hours, you can replace your furniture and enjoy your new patio, garage or basement floor.
